NEWS ALERT - Important Updates

And We’re Off!

Practice, Practice, Practice!  What a first week for our young Cougars!  What a great sight it was to see our players and cheerleaders this week coming together this week to start our season!   Thanks to everyone, our coaches, team moms, board, and especially our kids for getting us off to a great start.  You’ve heard it often, but it can’t be said enough.  Please make sure that your children drink plenty of water during the day so that they are well hydrated at practice during these dog days of summer.  Please also arrive at the practice field, ready to practice by the established practice start time so that practices can be as efficient as possible.  Your coaches and/or team parents will make you aware of any changes to your squad’s practice times and locations. Your Team Parent will be a very important source of information and communication for you this season.  If you are not aware of who your Team Parent is, please let your coach know.
 

An Important Note Regarding Inhalers and Epi-Pens.  Coaches will hold inhalers and epi -pens for players and cheerleaders.  All inhalers and epi-pens must have the pharmacy/prescription label on the box.  If your child is unable to self-administer their medication, a parent or guardian must remain at practice with your child.   For children that are able to self-administer their medication, parents will notified if the medication is needed, and 911 will be called where deemed necessary.  In all instances, if a parent is not at practice, 911 may be called at the coaches’ discretion.   Any questions, feel free to call Rob Grasso at 860-345-2622 (days) or 860-663-8028.

HKYFA 2010 Program Book.  Would your son or daughter like to see their picture with a special message from you in our Program Book? Please support the Haddam Killingworth Youth Football & Cheerleading in its 2^ndyear by purchasing an advertisement in our program booklet which is distributed at home games. This is a great way to expose your business and/or support family and friends in our football community.  Visit the website www.hkcougars.comfor more information or stop at the fundraising table at practices. 

HKYFA “Swag”.  HKYFA 2010 apparel will soon be available!  T-Shirts, caps, car magnets and more can be purchased at practices and all home games.  Be sure to stop by and “outfit” your family!

August 27^thTailgater.   The league will host its first “family friendly” Tailgater cookout after practice on Friday, August 27^th.  Celebrate the end of August practices, and the launch of our playing season with food and friends at the field.   Your Team Parent will be in touch about items that can be contributed to make this one great celebration for all of us!

Higganum Village Farmer’s Market.   Come visit HKYFA at our booth at the Higganum Village Farmer’s Market on Friday, August 27^thand Friday, October 8^thfrom 3:30 – 6:30 on the green in Higganum Center.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to stop by our booth to purchase HKYFA gear, sign up for our mailing list, and maybe even win some free “stuff!”

Concession Stand.   Remember that the Concession stand is a very important part of our operation.   All families are expected to volunteer at the concession stand during home games during the season.  Please respond with your support when asked by your Team Parent to sign up for a shift at the concession stand during a home game. 

Football Sizes.  There have been some questions about the size footballs your children play with. The CTYFL has specific rules in the By-Laws governing the ball size used by each squad.  We will be using a composite ball -the sizes are as follows:

    D Squad- Mighty Mites:  Spaulding J5PW or equivalent.
    C Squad:  Spaulding J5J or equivalent. 
    A and B Squads:  Spaulding J5Y or equivalent.

HK Cougars Cookbook.  Have a recipe you’d like to share to help raise funds toward items needed for the HK fields and teams?  Submit a recipe or two for the HK Cookbook.  There is no cost to type in a recipe and you may share the link with family and friends so that they may contribute their favorites as well.  Once the cookbooks are complete they will sell for $10.00 to the Haddam and Killingworth communities.

Missing Information.  In the remaining days before the season begins, you may be contacted by your Team Parents to follow up on registration information that may still be outstanding.  Please keep in mind that your child will not be able to practice unless we have received a Physician’s Statement (dated after 1/1/10), and a Birth Certificate.  Even if your child is not due/scheduled for a physical prior to August 1^st, the Physician’s Statement must be completed.  The form is simply a statement that your child is cleared to participate in football/cheerleading activities.  Please work with your Team Parents to ensure that this documentation is turned in by the first day of practice.  You can find the Physician’s Statement on our website.  Click on Docs and Forms, 2010 Registration.  You will find the last page of the Registration Packet.


Fundraiser:  Delicious Desserts and Pizza!!!!  Fundraising packets were distributed with equipment.  If you did not receive one, please be sure to pick up one at the July 31 mandatory meeting. This fundraiser earned our organization over $7,000.00 last year and will be another great success this year!   Please contact Melissa Steinhilper at (860)345-4623 with any questions.

HELP WANTED!  
 
Do you always have your camera at the game?  Do you like to relive game highlights?  We are looking for Game Reporters for each team to take pictures and record game highlights for our website and community publications.  If you are interested in being the Game Reporter for your team, please contact Rob Steinhilper ( ). 
 
We are also looking for a new Parent Liaison to serve on the Executive Board.  The Parent Liaison helps with all communications and outreach to the parents and/or guardians of our football players and cheerleaders.    Again, if you are interested in joining our Executive Board in this role, please contact Rob Steinhilper ( ).
 
DON’T FORGET FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT HANDOUT AND CHEERLEADING UNIFORM FITTINGS THIS SATURDAY!!! 
 
Please also make it a priority to submit all missing registration information (including missing insurance information, physician info, medical forms, birth certificates, proof of grade, etc.)  so that your child may begin practice on August 2^nd.
